Japanese shipping faced a period of sustained difficulties with the first and second oil shocks in 1973 and 1979. However, ever since its establishment, Nippon Gas Line had worked on upgrading its LPG tankers to handle the amazing growth in domestic demand for LPG, and went on to claim the largest share of the domestic LPG transportation market. Also, the ocean-going LPG tanker Horyu Maru (2,812m3) commenced operations as the Company expanded transportation all over Southeast Asia and Far East.
Everdina(2,509 m3), an IMO-standard carrier, went into service in 1981, and with this, we began shipping in Europe.

The Japanese shipping industry was hit hard by the rapid appreciation of the yen in 1985, and Japanese shipping companies continued to face hardship. Yet, even in such severe circumstances, Nippon Gas Line continued to make steady progress, and in 1988 when the IMO rules came into force in Japan, we led the industry with the introduction of the IMO-standard Izumi Maru No. 63(G/T999). In 1991, New Century (DW2,131mt) went into service as an asphalt carrier for Southeast Asia. We were continually working to diversify our transport operations.
