Starting in about 1960, the volume of goods being transported by ship increased dramatically the world over. This reflected the increased volume of trade between developed nations, and also the expansion in international demand for the transportation of oil.
At that time, Japan had a world-class shipbuilding industry that was churning out large tankers. Japanese shipping progressed in leaps and bounds.
Shipping history

Yet before long, regular international shipping routes were revolutionized with the emergence of marine container transport. With the introduction of containers, the transportation of cargo through regular international shipping routes became that much faster, and then through linkages with overland transport came the development of combined land and sea transportation services.
In this environment, on April 20, 1962, the Liquefied Gas Transportation Co., Ltd. was established. At that time, LPG was transported over-land by tank lorries. Then with the introduction of the LPG tanker Izumi Maru (No. 1), LPG started being transported by sea.
In 1964, the LPG tanker Izumi Maru No. 2, licensed to sail in coastal waters, went into service. It was at this time that transportation to Okinawa began, paving the way for future international shipping.

In 1966, the overland transportation division broke away, and the Company was repositioned as an LPG shipping company.
The Company’s name was subsequently changed to Nippon Gas Line, Co., Ltd, in 1968. Branch offices in Osaka and Tokyo were opened, and sales activities were further strengthened.
